Mabo Tofu

Mabo Tofu is a Chinese dish that has been adapted for the Japanese taste. It is supposed to be a hot chili, but mine is always mild.
Ingredients:
1 onion, finely chopped
1/2 leek, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp minced garlic
500g mince
1 block of tofu, cut into cubes
1 tsp chicken stock
3 tbsp sake
2 tbsp soy sauce
3 tbsp chili sauce
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp pepper
Sesame oil
Fry onions, leeks, garlic and ginger in a little salad oil. Add mince and brown. Sprinkle over chicken stock and sake, and 1 cup of water. Bring to the boil. Add soy sauce, chili sauce, sugar, salt and pepper, then tofu. Bring to the boil and simmer for 3 mins.
Mix cornstarch with 1/2 cup water and add to the pan slowly to thicken. Take off the heat, sprinkle with sesame oil.

  1. I can verify to this recipe--it works and is much nicer than making it from a store bought package. but, did you forget the ketchup?
